Post Op Instructions for Abdominoplasty
- Medication Should Be Taken As Directed
- Do not take aspirin or anti-coagulants for 2 weeks.
- Prescription pain medication can cause nausea, vomiting & constipation. Take 1/2 a pill with food (NOT on an empty stomach) if needed. You may take another 1/2 pill in 20 minutes and up to 2 every 4 hours as needed for pain.
- Activity
- NO SMOKING for 2 weeks before and after surgery
- Keep moving, wiggle toes, move feet, get up & walk around
- Do not drive for 2-3 weeks, depending on discomfort level.
- Do not strain abdominal muscles, roll to side rather than sitting up when getting out of bed.
- No lifting for 2 weeks. No heavy lifting for 4-6 weeks.
- Wound care
- Drainage around and/or from drain tubes is normal. Keep area covered with gauze sponges. If you notice leaking around tubes make sure suction bulb is compressed. Empty drains 2-3x/day. Keep record on sheet given to you & bring it with you to post op visits. Continue on antiobiotics until drain tubes are removed.
- You may shower or bathe with antibacterial soap & water. Pat incision area dry. Do NOT rub.
- Wear garment continuously as much as possible for 2 weeks. You may remove it to bathe & wash.
- Some swelling, tenderness, bruising & redness are normal. Excessive or dark discoloration should be reported to the office.
- Good nutrition & plenty of fluids are important for wound healing.
- Call (262) 245-0535 ext. 2211 if you experience:
- Cloudy or puss like drainage
- Temperature greater than 100
- Excessive bleeding, drainage, pain or dark discoloration.
